About Doctor Dribble

Darren Weissman aka Doctor Dribble

Darren Weissman

More than a World Record Holder

Darren Weissman was known as Doctor Dribble long before running marathons while dribbling two basketballs. He’s been a basketball skills specialist and personal trainer since the year 2000. Renowned for his ball handling abilities, “Coach Darren” works with clients of all ages, from children to NBA players. Whether it’s personal training or basketball lessons he instills in everyone the confidence needed for success.

His unique combination of skills has opened many doors for philanthropy. At age 19 Darren instructed free basketball clinics at a homeless shelter. He then started coaching local recreational league basketball teams and eventually began an elite travel team not-for-profit. The team predominantly consisted of inner city children and provided them with an opportunity to earn scholarships to college. Darren also became a caretaker for one of his teenage players at the tender age of twenty three. What began as carpooling, private instruction, and meals, ended up in parenthood and mentoring. Jonathan is now a junior at West Virginia University on a basketball scholarship.

As an empty nester, Darren decided to get into the best shape of his life and began training at Newton’s Method. A year later he ran his first marathon with only one week lead time. Most people thought it was crazy but he ended up running the 2012 ING Miami Marathon in 3 hours and 58 minutes (no basketballs yet). Inspiring many runners and non-runners to get fit, Darren began instructing “Cardio Lab” and offering personal training at Newton’s Method shortly thereafter.

Darren wasn’t planning on running any more marathons until a friend dared him to run the 2013 ING Miami Marathon while dribbling 2 basketballs. He did so in 4 hours and 49 minutes with no turnovers! Not knowing what to expect from the other runners, Doctor Dribble was overwhelmed with the positive reactions he received. The stories and feelings shared from the community were of awe and inspiration. Later he discovered that a Guinness World Record for the “fastest marathon while dribbling two basketballs” actually existed and he had broken it!

An opportunity to make it official presented itself but more importantly, Doctor Dribble wanted to use the milestone to raise funds for a worthy cause. Inspired by his experience with Jonathan, he decided on Our Kids whose mission is to help abused, neglected, or abandoned foster children find permanent safe homes. At the 2013 Publix A1A Fort Lauderdale Marathon he broke the world record officially in 4 hours 39 minutes and 12 seconds. Even better, he raised more money than expected. These events ignited the Doctor Dribble Tour and his lifelong dream of creating a charity of his own – Doctor Dribble’s Helping Hands.

As an inspirational athlete, Doctor Dribble now travels to cities everywhere completing half and full marathons while raising money to help children either underprivileged or overcoming traumatic experiences. He continues personal training and Cardio Lab at Newton’s Method along with basketball skill development. He also addresses groups, schools, and professionals as a motivational speaker. Darren’s passion remains the same. Fortunately he happened to stumble onto a way to use his talents to spread a positive message.

Anything is possible.
